Stunning Vinyl Lampshades

James Maidment, a gifted pupil in the Design Technology department, has designed and created quirky vinyl lampshades and has already sold one to his barber.

Each one is unique and made from genuine 12” vinyl records that used to belong to the collection of St David's College maths teacher Andrew Bohana.

Mr. Bohana who is said to have walls of his house devoted to his extensive vinyl collection was only too keen to help James make his lampshades.

“That’s one of the things that I love about St David’s, is the fact the teachers and students have a great rapport together,” said James.

“I knew Mr. Bohana has thousands of vinyl records so I emailed him asking if he had any he no longer wanted and he immediately helped.”

James who is the Deputy House Captain for Snowdon, and is studying applied science, English A ‘level, and DT, in the Sixth Form, used a laser cutter and heat vacuumed the vinyl into cones.

“I am very pleased with the way they have turned out as they look pretty striking and it’s obviously important to try and recycle things,” said James.

“I’ve already sold one to my barber in exchange for a haircut so that was a result.”

James added: “I’d like to thank Mr. O’Leary in the DT department for helping me develop my idea and making it a reality.”
