It was a great pleasure to present former pupil, Ben Hay, with his Team Wales hoodie as he prepares to represent Wales in the WorldSkills National Finals in Mechanical Engineering: CAD in Middlesborough on 14th November.

Ben, who left St David's College last year, has worked extremely hard to get to the finals and in the earlier rounds had to compete against some seriously talented individuals who currently work in industry or are students on higher education courses. Ben is unique in that he has acquired his skills and knowledge whilst still in the sixth form at a secondary school. Indeed, he has gained quite a reputation for himself for being one of the best in the business and thoroughly deserving of his place in the National Competition.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) uses specialist software to create two- and three-dimensional images and animations of projects both in manufacturing and for use in advertising and technical manuals. CAD can convey many types of information, including dimensions, types of material, and tolerances and is essential in offering solutions to both engineering and manufacturing problems.

This WorldSkills UK competition focuses on all the essential requirements for a successful career in mechanical engineering specialising in CAD. Competitors will be tested on their performance using CAD to produce 2D technical drawings, 3D models, and 3D assemblies. Competitors will be required to produce animations and should have a full understanding of ISO drawing standards and be able to use them effectively in different situations.

We wish Ben the very best of luck in the Competition!
