Last week we saw our 1st XV Rugby Team head off on tour to Gibraltar. After the past few years we’ve really missed not being able to get away and the opportunity for our pupils to get back to our annual trips away has been at the forefront of our minds.
School sport and physical activity in all its forms play an important role in the culture of St David’s College and the environment of away trips and tours offers a chance for growth beyond the classroom and makes a large impact on the pupils' lives.
Tours are an opportunity for players to enjoy the fruits of their labours. But this year's tour for St David's College took on far greater meaning. For a squad that has missed out over the past two years, this was an opportunity as a squad to spend time together, show what they can do and entertain they did. A feast of running, inventive and skilled rugby lit up the phenomenal facilities of Europa Point in Gibraltar and the more rustic setting of Marbella Rugby club.
We are immensely grateful to the Old Davidians and to Beech Home Development who has provided our tour polos and tour shirts, respectively.
Dan Lycett Director of Sport said:
“We like to tour places slightly off the beaten track with previous trips encompassing Georgia and the Basque area in Spain. The trip to Gibraltar we hope is the start of many trips to this hidden gem. As part of our program regularly travelling away is part of our DNA and overseas tours create real lasting experiences. ”
“Environment eats everything. It’s vital that small institutions such as ours quickly reinstate all these fabulous opportunities that make their time at St David’s so unique.”
The boys spent a few wonderful days in Gibraltar, the weather was amazing and they also took some moments to discover the area and do some tourism. We want to thank Gibraltar Rugby Select U20s and Marbella Rugby Club for their hospitality and their sportsmanship. They made us feel at home and completely welcome.
We came back home with two victories, being more mature and with lots of amazing memories!
