St David’s College fielded two teams for their production of this popular musical. I was privileged to attend the first performance with Team Wormwood and am indebited to Margaret and Philip Jones who reviewed Team Trunchbull the following evening, so two short reviews.
Young Emily Stirrup fully justified her selection as Matilda, her confidence grew as the piece progressed. Joe Kennedy-Lynch fully immersed himself in the role of wheeler dealer Mr Wormwood, whilst Katie Bridgeman was perfect as Mrs Wormwood, both these characters worked well together, Flynn Thomas-Morgan completed the Wormwood family as son Michael.
Bella Russell gave us a compassionate and polished portrayal of Miss Honey and there were creditable performances from Olivia Goodwin as Mrs Phelps, Mattie Morrison as Tommy and Finn Rose as Bruce. Having said that, I take my hat off to all who had minor roles, excellent work. Toran Proctor worked very hard in this first lead role as the scary Miss Trunchbull, well done.
Choreography and Chorus work was excellent in all musical numbers, with each member of the huge cast self-assured in carrying out their tasks, and knowing what was expected of them. Costumes and sets were perfect, with swift scenery changes from backstage crew, even though some of the scenes were quite short, there were no pauses throughout the piece.
It was a joy to see a full house, with tremendous support from the audience. I have it on good authority each of the following performances also had full houses. My grateful thanks to Headmaster Andy Russell for his kind invitation and I look forward to your next Production in 2024 Congratulations everyone!!

"We were delighted to attend the St David’s College production of Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda the Musical Jr” at Theatr Colwyn to see Team Trunchball’s Friday evening performance.
A perfect youth musical for a large company with many named parts, and plenty of scope for chorus/ensemble.
All the scenes were full of enthusiasm from the Company and Teagan Girling gave a good performance as Matilda.
Mr & Mrs Wormwood, (Joe Kennedy Lynch and Bella Russell) gave great comedic performances along with their son Michael, (Flynn Thomas-Morgan).
This musical shows that good comes out of evil, evil in the shape of vicious teacher, Miss Trunchbull played so well by Toran Procter in his first lead role. Miss Honey was well played by Lucie Webster.
There were other solo performances too numerous to mention but outstanding was Bruce, (Oliver Pearce) and Mrs Phelps, (Olivia Goodwin).
All the cast worked so hard and smashed their parts obviously loving being part of this lively and exciting show. The set and costumes were excellent the Stage team had to work hard to complete the scene changes. Congratulations, to the Production team including all those involved in staging this performance. Brilliant team work was evident to make this show happen.
